YORK PENNSYLVANIA
When you talk
about the York Pennsylvania area, you just have to talk about the
Harley-Davidson assembly plant. The York Pa. area is known for many things, York
Bar Bells, York Peppermint Patty, York Motorcycle Hill Climb and many other
things, but since the Harley-Davidson plant became America's turn around
business, that's probably what it's most noted for today. It attracts visitors
from all over the world. When I was there August 21, 2007 the visitors area was
filled with When I lived in York I would receive many emails from people that were coming to York Bike Week and wanted to know where to hang out, so I started my York Favorite places page. The page has changed over the years as businesses changed or in some cases went out of business. When I returned to York this year I decided to once again create a York page. I intended to make a reduced version of this page, but even so ..... It got a little long.

On to the other places..............
Cheers Bar on East Market St. York Pa. This place has a special meaning to me.... I worked here as a bouncer right before coming to Florida in 2001. This was a great place to work and I have a lot of memories from those days. The day time bartender is still there... a great guy... just one of those kinds of bartenders that knows everything about everybody and keeps everyone entertained. Great place to visit during the day, can't tell you about the crowd at night because I didn't get there, but as in most bars , the crowd at night is different.... I guess they still have the bouncers !!

THE BROKEN OAR
The Broken
Oar The Broken Oar is one of my favorite places. It's located right on the Susquehanna River and sort of doubles as a Biker Bar and Local fisherman hangout. It has the appearance and atmosphere of those real Biker Bars. A great place to take your beer and lady friend out to the outside tables and just relax. This place is a weekend hangout for Bikers! Take Route 30 East, get off at the Wrightsville exit, turn left at the exit stop sign and follow the signs to the Accomac Inn. When you get to the river and the Accomac Inn keep going pass the Accomac Inn ....Broken Oar is the brown building you see down the road.
The insides
a lot better looking than the outside,,,
Stop in and
see the barmaid.. Tell her Cube Sent ya ( I found the paper with her name on..Duh!)
SMITH'S HOTEL
What you see when
coming down the street..
Smith's Hotel - This is the place that's Farthest East from York in my listings. Go East on Route 30, get off at the Columbia exit (first exit after you across the Susquehanna River). Turn left at stop sign then right at the next stop sign. Keep going straight on Route 462 East until you go down a slight hill, across the railroad tracks as you start up the hill ..it's on your right. It's not hard to miss. Turn at the building , back the alley. This place has the best Chopped Steaks in the world. People travel from all over, just for these Chopped Steaks! Don't get the large Chopped Steak unless your a big eater. They also have other items on the menu in case your not into Chopped Steaks. There's also a small bar in the front. This place is worth the trip from York. On my August of 2003 tour of my favorite places in York Pa. area I was wonderfully surprised by a new deck at Smith's Hotel. The deck is a great addition to this long established restaurant / Bar.
DR. DOO WOPP
Although this part is about some buddies that I ran into at one of my favorite private clubs that are in York, Pa ( I belong to several of those clubs), I think if your from the York area and happen to be part of the class of 63 to 65, you will like this section of memories. I was visiting the Viking Athletic Association and ran into Dr. Doo Wopp who was also visiting and just happened to be performing that night at the Viking club with a bunch of other buddies of his. Now I have known Dr. Doo Wopp since my high school days and I have to tell you, he is an authority on 50-60's music. This guy walks, talks and sleeps this music. I bet he has every 45 RPM record from those days. Anyway.... We had some great singing groups in York from the 50 -60's time. The Quinn Tones, the DelCords ( who went on to become the Mag men) and some others. Many of these groups played the White Oaks Park and Reliance Fire hall and The Shady Dell. Some even went on to play the Apollo Theater. The group that was at the viking club called themselves the "Stringrays" and they did a great job and brought back a lot of memories. They played to a packed house and most of the people there I gathered were from the Class of 65 from West York High School. Any way, enjoy the photos and video's...... Maybe I'll get to see them again sometime...
