Update I was out Harley'n on this Saturday afternoon and thought I would stop in and see what was new. I always like to return to places I write a review on, because most new places have some growing pains to go thru until they get established and get all the bugs worked out. I had a chance to talk with the owner and her son and also with a chef from an exclusive restaurant on the beach who just happened to stop in for a beer. Janet informed me that when the Inspectors stopped by to check her place out, She wasn't even open for business and although she had all item's that she got wrote up for ( Like hand soap for the restrooms and certain signs that were needed ) She just didn't have everything in place yet. She also told me she holds a Food Management Certificate, but has to renew it within the next three months. The Chef told me Food Management Certificates are good for 5 years, but changes to the law are updated every year. He said if you happened to be between jobs or have moved, you may not be aware of new changes and therefore could be written up. He gave some examples and I could see how that could happen. So like I always say... There's always more to the story ! A re-inspection is due June 15th and everything is expected to pass. I observed a Turkey Club sandwich and it looked pretty nice. I'll continue to stop in from time to time and see how it's going. I do like the place, always friendly people there, cool bartenders and some of the renovations are completed. Stop in and see what you think. Remember that I'm a day time kind of person and don't usually hang out with the late night crowd, so things could be different at night.... and they usually are late at night, as I recall from my bouncer ( Pest Control) days back in Pennsylvania!
Original Review I stopped in to check out the new place in town and was not really that impressed. It's only been open for business a short time and renovations are still going on and they have some other issues to deal with. Janet McCann is listed as the owner... She also owns Dooley's on 28th St. N. in St. Pete. The bartenders in the photo above were friendly and a lot of fun... But it's only a beer & wine bar with a small food menu and because it's close to a church it will probably always be ...just a beer and wine bar in my opinion. The food prices seem to be ok... I haven't eaten there yet and after I saw their health report... It may be a while before I do.... Click the Link and view their violations from the health Dept.... These have to be corrected by June 14th 2011...... There's 19 violations... Click the date of the warning and you can read what the violations were!
The issue I had with the place was the price of bottled beer...$3.00 ... for Miller Lite...not good for a neighborhood bar. Janet should know better.. since she's been in the bar business for a while. I never can understand why new owners do this.... You hear a lot of reasons from different places...."Keep the low life's out"... " Need to recoup the cost of opening a new place"... etc. They did mention that they have Bud Select on tap for 99 cents, for what looks to be a 10 oz mug! Not bad if you like Bud Select! I also have a friend who visited the place and the owners son was working behind the bar. According to my friend, he got smart with him when my friend ask him if he could dim the lights a bit... with people like that behind the bar... you can bet customers will be spending their money elsewhere! Well, we will see how this place makes out.... my guess is at this point... 2 years max and they will be gone.... But we'll see what happens.. |
